Arrival of the new Patrol Boat

We are more than proud to announce the arrival of our new Patrol Boat, after years of chasing the illegal fishing boats in our old wooden boats, often not much faster than the boats we are chasing (thats not to say we didn’t catch a lot using them). We now have the one thing we needed most, and its already making an impact.

We have a very big thank you to say to our supporting partner ICFC (International Conservation Fund of Canada), who without their support this would not have been possible.

Creation of the Artificial Shellfish Reefs and Anti Trawling Devices

We have begun work on the first phase of a very large Project, this project will work in parallel with the upcoming MFMA, the project is to create Artificial structures that can be used as Natural Aquaculture, Essentially our definition of natural aquaculture is a system that requires no feeding and minimal maintenance, using the natural resources and managing them sustainably to create a never ending supply of resources for local fishers.

These structures will also work as anti trawling devices to protect the core conservation areas to be defined in the MFMA zoning plan.

For the full details on this project click here.

Koh Karang Surveys

Koh Karang Baseline Report   Knai Bang Chat

Over the past few months we have been traveling from Koh Seh to Koh Karang, a small island on the border of Kampot and Kep provinces. After receiving an invitation from Knai Bang Chat (Kep’s leading sustainable boutique Hotel) and the Ministry of Environment, we engaged in a series of marine surveys to assess the reefs and benthic areas directly adjacent to Koh Karang. A full set of marine surveys were needed to create a baseline data set and gather other information on the feasibility of Koh Karang becoming a Marine Protected Zone.

This work took a lot longer than expected due to monsoon weather conditions, but now all surveys are completed and you can read the report on the initial results here.

Together with The International Conservation Fund of Canada, who has helped greatly with extra funding for MCC and FiA to assist in the current crackdown on IUU in Kep, we can continue to fight against the illegal and destructive trawling that is destroying one of Cambodia’s most important and productive marine habitats.

2 Years of Protection on our House Reef

We just want to show off a little, when we began there was no fish left around our island, extreme overfishing and destructive fishing had left the area void of fish, if we saw 2 damsels on a dive it was a major event, now after 2 years of hard work and vigilance, we are seeing amazing results.

Below is a video taken under our pier, showing what can be done with very little money but tons and tons of passion and a little bit of love.

Assisting Kampot Fisheries Patrol Team

After we reported the entry into Cambodia of a set of Large IUU Vessels (Pair Trawlers), Kampot fisheries leapt into action and managed to locate, tackle and apprehend the destructive illegal vessels, but with limited boats and staff they needed assistance.

Kampot fisheries called directly to our team and requested for us to assist them, We left everything we were doing and went straight out to support the Fisheries Patrol Team. Our job was to help with the recovery of the net, and tow the larger vessel back to port as it had entangled its propeller in its own net whilst trying to escape.
